Plan Your Windows 10 Transition Before the Deadline

If your business still relies on Windows 10, this is the year to put a transition plan on the calendar. Microsoft lists October 14, 2025, as the end of standard support for Windows 10 Home and Pro. Specialized editions can follow different lifecycles, so confirm the edition installed on each device.

The date does not mean computers suddenly stop working. It changes the support and routine security-update position for affected systems. Waiting until the deadline makes it harder to coordinate purchases, application testing, and employee schedules without disrupting normal work.

Begin with an accurate inventory. Record the operating system, hardware specifications, business role, and assigned user for each workstation. Identify devices that can move to Windows 11 through a supported upgrade and those that require replacement or a separately evaluated transition option.

Check the applications and peripherals that matter to your business. Accounting tools, label printers, scanners, specialty equipment, and vendor-supported applications can influence the schedule. Obtain compatibility guidance from the relevant vendors and test representative workflows before upgrading an entire department.

Build a phased rollout. Start with a small group that reflects your actual environment, document issues, and refine the process. Schedule later groups around operational needs. A busy shipping period or month-end accounting cycle is a poor time to discover an overlooked dependency.

Protect the user's work before making changes. Verify backup coverage and account access, and decide how settings and local files will move. Include time for validation after the upgrade so staff can open the applications and resources they need.

If a device cannot transition on schedule, review eligible Extended Security Updates and other supported options with your provider. Availability and terms need verification. Treat an extension as a defined bridge with an owner and an exit date, rather than an indefinite substitute for modernization.
