Treat Website Maintenance as a Business Responsibility

A website launch transfers the project into ongoing operation. Someone still needs to maintain the software, renew the domain, verify inquiries, and update information as the business changes. Without assigned ownership, those tasks can become visible only when something stops working.

Start with the accounts that control the site. Confirm the domain registrar, hosting service, content platform, and authorized administrators. Use company-controlled contact information and appropriate account protection. The business should be able to reach the right support contacts even if a staff member or outside designer is unavailable.

Document the maintenance scope. Platform updates, extensions, backups, monitoring, and content changes may be handled by different parties. A hosting invoice does not automatically include every one of those responsibilities. Ask each provider what is included and how problems are escalated.

Make updates a controlled process. Review compatibility, preserve a recovery option, and test important functions after changes. A site can appear normal while a contact form or integration has stopped working. Where appropriate, use a staging environment before changing the live site.

Test recovery as well as backup creation. Determine what the backup includes and how the site would be restored if the hosting account or application were compromised. Keep the recovery process accessible to authorized people who can act when needed.

Review content on a schedule. Outdated staff listings, incorrect service descriptions, and broken links can undermine trust. Ask the business owner for each section to confirm its accuracy. Include downloadable documents and information embedded in images, which are easy to overlook.

Keep permissions current. Remove former editors and unused integrations after checking dependencies. Third-party widgets and tracking tools should have a clear purpose and an owner. Every additional component introduces another relationship to maintain.

A simple monthly check and a more deliberate periodic review can keep small issues from accumulating. Contact InnerDigital to establish a website care plan that covers technical maintenance, business ownership, and the customer actions your site must support.
